Squirrels Announce First Extension For 2013

It's Hammer Time.
In an expected move, Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic GM Adam Anson announced today that the team would be extending the contract of slugging OFer Josh "The Hammer" Willingham. "Josh was a big part of what we were able to do in 2012, and we expect him to help take this team even further in 2013. With Trout and The Hammer, we have a lot of power returning to our OF," said Anson smiling.

Power is something the Squirrels should produce plenty of in 2013. Mike Trout, Josh Willingham, and Robinson Cano have already shown 30+ HR power, and Mike Moustakas and Freddie Freeman should continue their development. With Adam Wainwright, Roy Halladay, Anibal Sanchez, and an expected extension of either Dan Haren or Wade Miley, the Squirrels will be free to draft offense early and often in the upcoming draft.

Squirrels Part Ways With Latos

In a three player deal, the Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic sent SPer Mat Latos to the Michigan Miracles for OFers Josh Willingham and Andy Dirks. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise knowing that Latos was the key piece in a deal that sent CC Sabathia packing. "It's time for us to move on from that deal. We made a calculated risk in dealing CC, with high hopes for the further development of Mat. We appreciate what Mat has given this team, but we needed to add some offense for a run at the Western Division Title," said GM Adam Anson.

Josh "The Hammer" Willingham will immediately step into a starting OF role for the Squirrels, and looks like a strong potential extension candidate. Willingham has 8 HR on the season, and is now officially the Squirrels' leader in that category and second on the team in RBI. After the draft, it was widely speculated and acknowledged that the Squirrels had one of, if not the, worst OF's in all of eMLB. However, with the quick development of Mike Trout and adding Josh Willingham, the Squirrels' OF is beginning to take shape.

HellBoy comes back to Springfield

Hellickson will look to solidify the Squirrels 2012 rotation.
In an interesting move, the Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic traded for SPer Jeremy Hellickson today, in a deal that seemed to materialize out of nowhere. Hellickson was acquired along with RPer Phil Coke and OFer Ryan Sweeney in return for OFer Michael Brantley, and RPers Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood. Wood and Marmol were expected to be a solid hold/save combo for the Squirrels this year, but with the recent demotion of Marmol and the injury and inconsistent performance of Wood, the two quickly became expendable. OFer Michael Brantley, who is off to a mediocre start has potential, but was not overly valued by the team with the recent call up of Mike Trout.

The big prize here, though, is Hellickson. Hellickson appears to be building upon his success as a rookie and gives the Squirrels a respectable starting five. Questions still remain for nearly every one of the top five SPers, but at least on paper, Wainwright, Sanchez, Billingsley, Latos, and Hellickson look pretty formidable.

Reasons for Hope...Offense

While most "pundits" have the Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic at or near the bottom of the pre-season rankings, there are some reasons for hope. Upon analysis of the Squirrels' draft, a common theme becomes apparent. GM Anson drafted towards youth and potential. Most players on the Squirrels' roster have room to significantly improve their numbers from a season ago, with the obvious exception of Robinson Cano. The following is an upbeat and "good to best case scenario" for the Squirrels' roster this year. Why not? All the negatives are out there...might as well give the fans some hope. (avg/hr/rbi/sb/r/bb)

Offensive Draft Picks
  1. Brett Lawrie- Showed pop, speed, and a maturity at the plate that should carry over to 2012. Will get 550 AB's if healthy. (.285/23/85/30/85/50)
  2. Freddie Freeman- Looks to be more consistent than Heyward and shouldn't suffer much of a sophomore slump. (.290/24/90/5/85/50)
  3. JP Arencibia- Worst case, this is a 20HR/60RBI catcher. Best case, his minor league numbers show improvement in average after a year at each level. (.230/26/80/0/55/35)
  4. Colby Rasmus- Will he ever harness all the talent? Let's pretend this is the year...kind of. (.265/22/75/12/65/55)
  5. J.D. Martinez- A lot of potential here, with a nice season already under his belt in zero pressure Houston. (.290/15/85/2/70/40)
  6. Dayan Viciedo- A forgotten top prospect whose path was cleared by Quentin's departure. Big time power potential and an improving eye. (.268/20/60/3/60/35)
  7. Mike Trout- The much maligned, TOP PROSPECT...already with some MLB experience. The Halos didn't spend all those $$ on Pujols and Wilson to win in a few years. Trout is ready, and Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu are old and ass. (.274/14/55/28/65/45) OR (.270/18/65/35/85/60)
  8. Robinson Cano- Listed here, because there isn't any room to grow...if anything, he may regress slightly. (.299/25/100/5/100/40)

Extensions
  1. Dan Uggla- Needed a 33 game hitting streak to hit .233 last year. He's better than that. Not monumentally better...but still. (.258/35/102/3/90/65)
  2. Jimmy Rollins- Last year was about right on for Rollins. Expect similar...maybe a slightly better average. (.270/15/70/60/25/55)
When looking at these projected numbers, it is easy to get excited about a potentially powerful team. The question becomes whether or not the team can swipe enough bags and hit for a high enough average to compete in weeks when the power fails. The infield is very likely to produce at the clip listed above, it is the OF that will have to surprise people if the Squirrels are to be anything but an afterthought in 2012. Granted, a lot of things would have to go the right way for this squad to succeed, but that one word comes to mind again...almost a curse word in the eMLB...potential.

Draft Update--Squirrels Reach...Anson Looks Foolish

Draft Update by beat reporter Daniel D. Tractor

After a solid first four rounds of the 2012 eMLB draft, the Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic have managed to raise some eyebrows with several of their subsequent picks. I had the Squirrels first four rounds graded at A, B, B, A, respectively. It appears to the outsider that perhaps upper management had no plan going into the latter rounds of the draft as questionable pick after questionable pick have been made since the selection of Adam Wainwright.

Round 5: SP Anibal Sanchez- Sanchez has all the makings of an ace, but has never really put it all together. Sanchez slots into the Squirrels rotation as an unspectacular 3rd starter behind Wainwright and Latos, and will either end up being a nice choice or a really poor choice by Anson. Rd 5 Grade- C.

Round 6: RP Carlos Marmol- Anson re-upped another former Squirrel in closer Carlos Marmol. Marmol was one of the last few elite closers left in the draft at this point, and the selection seems justified, but selecting an OFer probably made more sense...and we will get to that later. Round 6 Grade- B-.

Round 7: OF Mike Trout- Anson made what most around the league are calling the worst pick in the draft. This was a reach of epic proportion and is one that this reporter will call a massive mistake. When prodded about the pick, Anson defended himself saying, "The Angel OF is crowded right now, but we believe that Trout will force his way into the lineup whether by his play or by the poor play of a slew of aging alternate options for the Angels. Trout has the makings of an Andrew McCutchen, and we are excited to be in on the ground floor. We truly think he will be a force for us in 2012 and beyond." Bull. Trout is easily a year from producing solid numbers and will likely be a free agent again before he produces enough to merit this selection. This selection was forced by Anson's foolish decision to grab Marmol (a two category contributor at best,) in round 6. Round 7 Grade- F.

Round 8: OF Colby Rasmus- Another reach for an OFer. The Marmol selection comes into play again, as Anson was forced to make two terrible OF selections, and guarantee that the Squirrel 2012 OF will be one of the worst that eMLB has ever seen. Rasmus may have a slight rebound, but at this point in his career, it is clear he was always overrated. Round 8 Grade- D.

Round 9: RP Chris Perez- Perez was a nice value here, and with the terrible selections before, one can understand why Anson would go value here...to save face. Round 9 Grade- B.

Round 10: SP Chad Billingsley- Another pick, and another reclamation project for the Squirrels. Billingsley was once an ace in the making...since, he has fallen to a 4th or 5th starter who will get some K's, but bloat the ERA and WHIP. Once again, IF Billingsley can return to form, he would make a serviceable fourth, but with so many questionable picks, Anson can not assume they are all going to fall his way. Round 10 Grade- C-.

Round 11: C J.P. Arencibia- Average killer Arencibia should provide some good pop, and for what was there as far as catchers, the selection seems ok. Round 11 Grade- B-.

Round 12: RP Evan Meek- Anson re-upped yet another former Squirrel in Evan Meek. Meek was once a dominant reliever, but is coming off a lost 2011. Oh good, another reclamation project...do you see a theme here? Look for Meek to contribute to Holds and K's...but even at his best, he still sapped ERA and WHIP. Round 12 Grade- C+.

Round 13: OF J.D. Martinez- Martinez will hit in the middle of the worst lineup in both MLB and eMLB. Congratulations kid. Martinez should provide good average, minimal pop and limited RBI chances. Another OFer...another question mark. Round 13 Grade- D+.

Round 14: OF Vayan Viciedo- More of the same. Unproven Vayan Viciedo. Viciedo has a lot of pop, but that's about it. He will likely struggle in his first full year, and will disappoint as often as he delights. Round 14 Grade- D.

Round 15: SP Brett Myers- Anson solidified a middle of the road rotation by selecting another Astro in Brett Myers. Myers will K some guys, but will detract from ERA and WHIP, while only contributing mildly to Wins. Round 15 Grade- C-.

With eleven picks left, the Squirrels will easily be picked to finish dead last in division and should be considered high in the running for worst record overall. Overall Draft Grade- D+.

Squirrels Focus on Youth--Future in first four Rds.

The Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic are in full on rebuild mode, and with that said have focused on youth and the teams future in the first four rounds of the 2012 eMLB Draft. The first pick, was an unlikely one, as projected number one overall pick, Robinson Cano fell to number six. "We we're surprised, and obviously thrilled, to be able to land Robinson without moving up in the draft. He's a superstar and a cornerstone to rebuild the Squirrels for the future around," said GM Adam Anson. Early indications are that Robinson Cano will be the first five year player Anson himself has signed.

In round two, the Squirrels delighted their fanbase by taking young up and coming 3B Brett Lawrie. Of Lawrie, Anson said, "A young .280/20/85/85/20 3B? Yes, please." If Lawrie can build on his rookie campaign, look for big things from Lawrie...think David Wright before he started to suck. Expectations are that Lawrie will be given a two year deal, but a three isn't out of the question.

In round three, the Squirrels were happy to re-up with last year's 1B, Freddie Freeman. Anson smiled when asked about Freeman, "Freddie showed us a lot out there last year. He has a great approach at the plate and an ability to hit to all fields. We think his patience at the plate will only improve based on his minor league numbers, and expect Freddie to contribute solidly in 4-5 categories for several years to come." Look for Freeman to be signed to a two year deal, although depending on Lawrie, a three year deal might land in Freeman's lap.

Breaking from his gameplan to go offense in the first four rounds, Anson went SPer in round four and took ace Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is coming off of a lost 2011, but fortunately was injured in spring training last season, and is expected to be ready to go full tilt by opening day. "The value was just to good to pass up. I think we stole Wainwright," said Anson, "he's a true ace and probably should have gone off the board before a few other SPers that went ahead of him. We're thrilled to pair him up with Latos for the next few years." Look for Wainwright to garner a two year deal and be a solid extension candidate.

WINTER MEETINGS BULLETIN--Latos/McLouth

GM Adam Anson has released the following memo to fellow eMLB Owners and GM's.

The Squirrels are in full rebuilding mode for 2012, and are exploring what Mat Latos (3/13) might bring in a trade. Any trade that involves Latos would likely have to include Nate McLouth (3/12.) GM Anson only had this to say to his fellow GM's: "Latos has a nice contract, and just got traded to a team that should score him some runs. While bringing on McLouth would certainly negate some of Latos' value, McLouth is a strong rebound candidate headed back to Pittsburgh, and a sure fire starting gig."

It is likely that Anson would entertain offers on only Latos or only McLouth, but they seem to make a lot more sense as a package deal for a current contender, as Latos alone commands a decent price, while the overall price can be dropped significantly when taking two three year contracts from a rebuilding team.

Squirrels Speculation--2012 eMLB Draft

With almost no contracts in the cupboard, the Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic look to have a quiet Winter Meetings. That said, we take a look at the potential picks the Squirrels might take with the 1.6 pick. It seems safe to assume that Jose Bautista, Robinson Cano, Troy Tulowitzki, and Adrian Gonzalez will all be off the board when the Squirrels pick, and if one of those players was still around the Squirrels would jump on them, but this article will assume that these players will all be off the board come pick 1.6. These are all options, depending on who goes in the five previous picks, in no particular order.

Andrew McCutchen- OF: A young OFer with all the tools to be a five category contributor and possibly a six category contributor and a solid five year contract. Saw a drop in AVG in 2011, and the lineup he hits in is always a question, but the sheer talent is undeniable and if the Squirrels pass on "The Dread Pirate", expect him to go quickly following.

Mike Stanton- OF: Another of three young OFers that the Squirrels are targeting. The potential for Stanton is unreal. He could easily put up 40+ HR and 120RBI in the revamped Marlins lineup, while contributing solidly to above averagely in the average, runs, and walks categories. While Stanton will not contribute a lot to the SB category, the difference in HR and RBI may more than make up for this deficiency. Either way, a five year player and a power cornerstone.

Justin Upton- OF: The final of the three OFers that the Squirrels are targeting. J-Up finally put it all together last year, and a jump to 2011 Kemp numbers is not out of the question. Contributions to all six categories are a given and if Upton does indeed take the next step, he could well end up being the best player in the entire draft.

Hanley Ramirez- 3B: A year ago, HanRam was a no brainer as a first round pick, but after a disappointing 2011 and a forced move to 3B, his stock has never been lower. However, at age 28 and in a lineup that will likley score a lot of runs, Ramirez is a fantastic rebound candidate. If he returns to his pre 2011 numbers, especially at a shallow 3B position, he is a steal, and while risky, he is deserving of consideration and a three year contract.

Others in the discussion:

Mark Teixeira- 1B: It seems too early to take Tex, but he will still be the cornerstone of a potent Yankees lineup, and a proven power commodity that is not to be taken lightly.

Jose Reyes- SS: It seems unlikely that the Squirrels would take a SS after having extended Rollins, but that being said, Rollins will be gone after 2012, and Reyes has big things in store for Miami...plus, anyone fits into the Util spot. :)

While one of the OFers looks like a likely choice for the Squirrels, a 3B or 1B would make a lot of sense as well, especially given the number of outstanding OFers in this particular draft. It will be interesting to see how the first five picks go, and the choice GM Adam Anson will have to make come pick 1.6.

Winter Meetings Preview

In the movies, when the star "goes all in" at the poker table, the card he needs falls and defying all odds, he wins the money and in direct correlation, the glory. Unfortunately in real life, (yes, fantasy baseball is real life,) when you need that ace of spades to fall, you usually wretch in horror as the three of clubs is turned and you leave the table with nothing but dejection. However, it is in that moment of dejection and loss, that character and attitude serve a strong man the best, and it was in that moment, or briefly thereafter, that Springfield Flying Squirrels of Republic GM Adam Anson finally let the 2011 season go and began looking toward 2012. "Yeah, I lost it a little at the extension presser, but I expect a lot of myself and my team, and we failed to meet expectations last year...but we're ready to move forward now." Hopefully this season the Squirrels can exude some of the passion their GM has in the offseason.

As the Squirrels move into the 2012 draft, the cupboard is very nearly bare. Along with returning extensions Jimmy Rollins and Dan Uggla, are Mat Latos and throwaway Nate McLouth...thats it. There are of course disadvantages and advantages to this situation. On the plus side, this is a historically deep draft and therefore a lot of good contracts to be given. Another positive is that Anson will finally, in his third season as GM, be able to field a team that is entirely his own. On the down side of course is that the team has almost no foundation and to contend in 2012, every pick will have to be a winner. "It's going to be a real challenge to compete this year, our division is very strong and we have very few returning players, but we expect to be competitive and challenge for a title every year," said Anson.

It appears at this point that the Flying Squirrels will likely utilize the draft to rebuild the team from the ground up, but as Anson has shown in his two years as GM, he is never afraid to pull the trigger on a deal if he feels it will help the team compete. When asked if any trades were in the works, Anson had the following to say, "We've had a few small discussions here and there, but nothing of substance has come up so far. We value our 6th slot in each round, because in this deep draft, there will be strong value there round after round...that said, if anyone wants to move a solid contract, we'll always look into it...especially if Nate McLouth was to find his way to that other team."

Here's to a new season!
